It is interval (cron) based, and can be configured under Admin->Services->Indexer. If you don't use it (it is used for generating offline indexes, downloadable by IDE integrations), you can leave the cron field blank and exclude all repositories.

Looks like the execption happened when the indexer was being saved. Do you keep
seeing this error every time the indexer task runs?
Is it also reproducible in 2.0.7?
